Spool
Terms of Use
Effective September 28, 2026
These terms are an agreement between you and Joe Designs, LLC (“Joe Designs”, “we”) that covers your use of the Spool app. By downloading, installing or using Spool, you accept them. If you don’t accept them, don’t use Spool.
The short version
- Spool is free while it’s in beta. It’s beta software, so keep a copy of your mail on your server.
- Your mail and your accounts belong to you. We don’t receive them.
- Spool is provided as is, and our liability is limited as far as the law allows.
- Third-party services you connect, such as your mail provider, Google or OpenAI, have their own terms, and you agree to those separately.
Your license
We give you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable license to download, install and use Spool on Macs you own or control. The license covers personal use and use within your own work or organisation. Spool is licensed, not sold. We and our licensors keep all rights not expressly granted to you here, including the Spool name and icon.
You may not:
- sell, rent or redistribute Spool, or present a modified copy as the official app;
- remove or tamper with its code signature, notices or update checks in order to pass it off;
- use Spool to send spam, or to break the law or anyone else’s rights;
- use Spool to access mail accounts you aren’t authorised to use.
Beta software and price
Spool is in public beta, and we don’t charge for it during the beta. We may charge for later versions or features. If we do, we’ll say so clearly before you pay, and the version you already have won’t stop working because of it.
Beta software can have bugs, including bugs that affect your mail. Spool can move, delete and send messages on your server, so use it with an account whose server keeps a complete copy of your mail, and keep your own backups. A permanent delete from the Trash can’t be undone.
We may change, pause or stop offering Spool at any time. The known limitations of the current version are listed on the Spool page.
Your mail and your accounts
Your mail, contacts and account credentials remain yours. Spool stores them on your Mac and exchanges them with the services you connect, as the Privacy Policy describes. We get no rights to your content.
You’re responsible for the security of your Mac and your accounts, and for the mail you send with Spool.
Third-party services
Spool works with services we don’t run: your mail provider, Google (for Gmail sign-in), OpenAI (for the optional writing tools through your own ChatGPT account), GitHub (for updates) and any extensions you install. Using them through Spool doesn’t change your agreement with them, and you’re responsible for following their terms. We’re not responsible for those services, their availability or what they do with your data.
The writing tools use your ChatGPT plan and its limits. We don’t control OpenAI’s service, and that feature may change or stop working if OpenAI changes it. Text produced by the writing tools can be wrong, so read it before you send it.
Extensions are made by third parties. Joe Designs doesn’t review, endorse or support them, and you install them at your own risk.
Updates
Spool checks GitHub for new versions and asks before downloading or installing one. Before an update is installed, Spool checks that it is signed by Joe Designs and notarized by Apple. These terms apply to updates as well, unless an update comes with different terms.
Feedback
Bug reports and suggestions are welcome, on the issue tracker or through our contact form. If you send us feedback, you agree that we may use it to improve Spool without owing you anything for it. Issues on GitHub are public, so leave personal information and mail out of them.
No warranty
SPOOL IS PROVIDED “AS IS” AND “AS AVAILABLE”, WITHOUT WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, TITLE AND NON-INFRINGEMENT. WE DON’T WARRANT THAT SPOOL WILL BE ERROR-FREE OR UNINTERRUPTED, OR THAT IT WON’T LOSE, CORRUPT OR MISDELIVER MAIL.
Limitation of liability
TO THE FULLEST EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, JOE DESIGNS WILL NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES, OR FOR ANY LOSS OF DATA, MAIL, PROFITS OR GOODWILL, ARISING OUT OF OR RELATED TO YOUR USE OF SPOOL, EVEN IF WE WERE TOLD SUCH DAMAGES WERE POSSIBLE. OUR TOTAL LIABILITY FOR ANY CLAIM ABOUT SPOOL IS LIMITED TO THE GREATER OF THE AMOUNT YOU PAID US FOR SPOOL IN THE 12 MONTHS BEFORE THE CLAIM OR US$50.
Some jurisdictions don’t allow certain warranties or damages to be excluded. In those places, the limits above apply only as far as the law permits.
Indemnity
If a claim is brought against Joe Designs because of how you used Spool, such as mail you sent or your breach of these terms, you agree to cover our reasonable costs of dealing with it.
Ending these terms
You can stop using Spool at any time by deleting it and its data. If you break these terms, your license ends automatically. When the license ends, you must stop using Spool. The sections on warranty, liability, indemnity and governing law continue to apply after that.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the State of New Mexico, USA, without regard to its conflict-of-law rules. Any dispute will be resolved in the state or federal courts in Bernalillo County, New Mexico, unless the law where you live gives you the right to bring it elsewhere.
Spool is subject to U.S. export laws. You may not use it where those laws prohibit it.
Changes to these terms
We may update these terms. If we do, we’ll post the new version here and change the effective date. If a change is significant, we’ll mention it in the release notes. If you keep using Spool after a change, you accept the new terms.
If any part of these terms can’t be enforced, the rest still applies. These terms and the Privacy Policy are the whole agreement between you and us about Spool.
