Actual Reports

Financial statements for the rest of us

Actual Budget is a fantastic open-source personal finance tool, but it lacks the rigorous accounting reports that businesses rely on. Actual Reports fills that gap—generating proper Profit & Loss statements, Balance Sheets, and more from your Actual Budget data.

Real Reports, Real Fast

Point Actual Reports at your Actual Budget database and you get instant access to five professional accounting reports:

Profit & Loss shows your income minus expenses over any time period you choose—by month, quarter, or year. Compare periods, spot trends, and see exactly where your money went.

Balance Sheet gives you the classic accounting snapshot: assets on one side, liabilities and equity on the other. It's the single best way to understand your net worth and financial position at any given moment.

Trial Balance lists every account with its debit and credit balances—a quick sanity check that everything adds up (spoiler: it should). Export to CSV when you need to dig deeper in a spreadsheet.

General Ledger is where you go when you need the full transaction history for any account. Every purchase, every transfer, every penny accounted for.

Chart of Accounts rounds out the set with a complete list of all your categories and accounts, organized and ready for reference.

The Tech Stack

Actual Reports is built with Bun and the Hono framework on the backend, with React 19 and Tailwind CSS powering a clean, responsive frontend. It reads directly from your Actual Budget SQLite database—completely read-only, so there's zero risk to your data.

Install it globally with bun add -g actual-reports or npm install -g actual-reports, run actual-reports, and point your browser to localhost:3000. That's it. Your reports are waiting.

The architecture is intentionally simple. It's a local tool for local data, designed to spin up in seconds when you need it and get out of your way when you don't. The print-optimized layouts mean you can generate physical reports for your records (or for that accountant who still wants paper).

If you're an Actual Budget user who wants more than charts and summaries, give Actual Reports a spin. The project is open source and PRs are welcome.
