Race begins with a beautiful view of the Sandia Mountains, as the course gradually inclines for 5.2 miles. Last mile of the course is the toughest, at a 12% grade, and finishes at the base of the world’s longest tram. Music, motivation stations, and aid stations will be provided on the course to help keep your feet moving and your heart beating.

On Sunday, May 18 car lovers will gather for the 24th Annual Albuquerque Museum/New Mexico Council of Car Clubs Automobile Show. Hundreds of antique, classic, exotic and sports cars will be on display in the museum parking lot along with trucks, motorcycles and vintage camper trailers. The car show this year will also be celebrating 50 years of Edsel and 100 years of GM with a special award for top GM and Edsel cars.

Sunday, May 18, 2008 The Friends of Coronado State Monument, together with the Sandoval County Historical Society and Coronado State Monument, are sponsoring a presentation on Sunday, May 18, 2008, featuring the famed architect John Gaw Meem%u2019s role in the construction of Coronado State Monument and other buildings designed and built during the New Deal era. Meem expert and architect Luis %u201CG.L.%u201D Castillo will lead the presentation/discussion. Also speaking will be author Richard Melzer, who wrote Coming of Age in the Great Depression, the Civilian Conservation Corps Experience in New Mexico, 1933-1942. Both talks will last about 45 minutes and attendees will then be invited to tour the Monument. Refreshments will be served.

Sunday, May 18, 2008 San Ysidro Catholic Parish of Corrales will celebrate the feast of its patron saint from 10 am until 5 pm on Sunday, May 18, 2008. The event will start with an outdoor Mass at 10 am in the courtyard of the Historic Old San Ysidro Church on Old Church Road in the village of Corrales. Immediately following the Mass, Fiesta participants, the Parish Spanish Choir singing traditional Spanish hymns and a group of Matachines will escort the statue of San Ysidro from the Old Church to the Parish grounds where the fiesta will begin around noon. Come and enjoy great food, live entertainment, a silent auction, kids’ games, arts and crafts, and a cash prize raffle. Raffle tickets may be purchased in advance or at the Fiesta on Sunday. This is a free event.

Saturday, May 17, 2008 The National Atomic Museum will host Dr. Alan Hale, author of “Everybody’s Comet: A Layman’s Guide to Comet Hale-Bopp”. Dr. Hale is the co-discoverer of the Hale-Bopp comet in 1995. Since that time he founded the Southwest Institute for Space Research, now the Earthrise Institute, in Otero County, New Mexico. Janet Asimov said in her preface to his book: “He…explains the science and history of comets, and gives practical advice about seeing them when they show up. His argument for scientific literacy is terrific, and his final sentence utterly compelling." Talks and book signings take place at 5:30 p.m., at the Museum, 1905 Mountain Rd. NW in Albuquerque. Dr. Hale will speak on Saturday, May 17. A seat can be reserved by calling the Museum at 245-2137, extension 114. The cost to attend the lecture is $10 for Museum members; $15 for non-members. For those who wish to pay in advance for four of the lectures, the cost will be $30 for members and $45 for non-members.
FAIR - Heritage Day at Casa San Ysidro

Saturday, May 17, 2008 Casa San Ysidro will celebrate Heritage Day 2008 with entertainment and artist demonstrations on Saturday, May 17 from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. This partially reconstructed nineteenth-century home is an important link to the history of New Mexico. As part of the Heritage Day activities the public is invited to tour the rooms of Casa San Ysidro. Inside the adobe walls visitors will find Spanish Colonial furniture, authentic handwoven floor coverings, hand forged iron tools, an impressive loom made in the late 1700s and a New Deal-era hand carved chair. Museum docents will be on hand to answer questions and share the history of this special house. The grounds surrounding Casa San Ysidro will be filled with weaving and carving demonstrators, children’s art activities, churro sheep and bread baking in a traditional horno. The Historic Old Church, located across the street from Casa San Ysidro, will also have activities in honor of Heritage Day. Admission to both facilities is free on Saturday, May 17. This is the only time this year that Hubbell Trading Post will hold a rug sale in the Albuquerque/Santa Fe area. It’s an opportunity to purchase an authentic Navajo rug, personally selected by a lifelong trader on the Navajo Reservation, and an opportunity to learn about Navajo textiles from an expert. Steve will also lecture on the history, process, and materials of authentic Navajo weavings.

Sponsored by the City of Albuquerque’s Cultural Services Department, the Filipino American Foundation of New Mexico and the San Felipe de Neri Church, the event is sometimes called "Flores de Mayo" because of the prominence of colorful flowers in the celebrations. Presentations by the Philippine cultural Dancers and Kulintang Ensemble of Albuquerque, and a reception that features Filipino food catered by Fil Am Fast Food Mart are highlights of the event. Crumb and a correlated mentality that reflects the writings of Charles Bukowski) have intersected with popular graphics (such as those on cereal boxes) to influence a new generation of draftsmen. The exhibition includes the work of New Mexico artists Maureen Burdock, Luke Dorman, David Leigh, Larry Bob Phillips, Clayton Porter and Rose Simpson. The concurrent exhibitions, Alchemy and Snap Crackle Pow!, both explore a "pieced together" vocabulary of popular culture.

Sunday, March 02, 2008 - Sunday, May 18, 2008 Bill Brandt is one of the best-known British photographers of the 20th Century known for his high-contrast images of British society and his distorted nudes and landscapes. His early work sensitively documented the social contrasts of pre–World War II life in Britain: from farmers and miners to landlords and industrial barons. Later he shifted to a surreal, formal experimentation. Even though much of his work was driven by specific historic periods and events, Brandt’s endless search for ways to expand the medium continues to make his work fresh and timeless today.

Saturday, February 16, 2008 - Monday, July 07, 2008 The 2008 United States Bowling Congress Open Championships in Albuquerque, N.M. marks the 105th running of the event and the tournament’s second trip to Albuquerque (2000). The 2008 USBC Open Championships will be conducted every day from Feb. 16 until June 29 (135 consecutive days). The Open Championships is the world’s largest annual participatory sporting event, attracting between 12,000 and 16,000 five-player teams (60,000-80,000 participants).

Sunday, January 20, 2008 - Saturday, June 14, 2008 This exhibit highlights the works of famed Pueblo women artists, Helen Cordero (Cochiti), Maria Martinez (San Ildefonso), Pablita Velarde (Santa Clara), Tonita Pena (Cochiti), and Margaret Tafoya (Santa Clara). An auction of this artwork will take place on June 14, 2008 to benefit the Institute of Pueblo Indian Studies housed within the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center.

Saturday, December 01, 2007 - Sunday, May 25, 2008 This temporary exhibit demonstrates how propaganda has been used for good and for evil. By displaying primarily war-era posters and the continuous playing of Triumph of the Will (the famous propaganda film commissioned by Hitler of Leni Riefenstahl), the exhibit explains several common techniques, challenging the viewer to think critically about how information is delivered and whether we are often taken in by messages solely by how they are delivered.

From the Hindenburg to Goodyear, airships continue to capture our imagination. In this new exhibit we explore the past, present and future of airships. We revisit the wonder of these “monsters of the sky” through fascinating models, films, art and historical objects.
